Annual Medical Camp

A dedicated group of about 30 medical professionals from Newcastle (U.K.) have been visiting Dervan every year for the past 16 years. They conduct complicated surgeries, Knowledge sharing sessions for doctors, nurses, students and participate in various village level programs to increase health awareness among the villagers. This team includes Neuro surgeons, Anaesthetists, Nurses, Interventional Radiologists and Plastic Surgeons. They travel to Dervan at their own expense and provide their services free of cost. The needy villagers get the treatment from these doctors and Walawalkar Hospital staff also gets an opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge about modern medicine from their UK counterparts.

The activities and humanitarian work at the Walawalkar Hospital have gained international attention as this tiny, neglected village of Dervan, firmly established its place on the map of India. The noble work at the hospital has been appreciated by an international audience, resulting into students from different countries venturing towards Dervan to study and learn at the hospital. Until now, students from Rosalind Franklin University (USA), The University of Barcelona (Spain), National University of Singapore (Singapore), The University of Hamburg (Germany) and The University of Oxford (U.K) have visited and worked at the hospital.

Another exciting opportunity and moment of pride for the region- the historic 900-year-old Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, U.K. (world’s first-ever university to teach surgery) has now introduced their ‘Basic Surgical Skills course’ at the Walawalkar Rural Medical College (first one in India). This is a unique training opportunity introduced in India for the first time, thanks to the guidance and efforts of Dr Kanvinde (Orthopedic Surgeon from the U.K.) and Dr Sunil Nadkarni (Spine Surgeon).

The Walawalkar Rural medical college recently partnered with another prestigious institution - The Royal College of Anaesthetists, U.K., for a special 6-week training course designed and delivered by their staff right here in Dervan. Walawalkar Hospital and the Rural Medical College are the first ones in all of India to be chosen by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, U.K. to send their staff for training. These specialists introduce and educate the students at B.K.L.W. Hospital with the latest technology, concepts in the field of Anesthesia during the 6-week program

International Workshop on Endo Urology

The Knappchaft Clinic, from Saarland, Germany, and the B.K.L.W hospital collaborated to run a one-week ‘Urology’ training camp in December 2019. This camp was hosted under the guidance of the very well-known Dr Christoph Lang, Chief of Urology at Knappschaftskrankenhaus, Sulzbach, Saarland, Germany, and an esteemed professor. Dr Sneha Naik (Asst. Professor of Urology) and Dr Taiseer Sayegh (Asst. Professor of General Surgery from Restful Clinic in Saarbruchen, Saarland, Germany) also participated in this workshop along with Dr Lang.

TALENT : Transforming Adolescent Life through Nutrition

The ‘Adolescent Girls Health and Empowerment’ program has been conducted successfully for the last 22 years by the S.V.J.C. Trust in this rural part of Maharashtra. A ‘Regional centre of Adolescent Health & Nutrition’ was inaugurated in 2018 and has now received international recognition and financial support. This ‘Dervan pattern’ was adopted as a base by the Medical Research Council, UK, and Southampton University and is currently being implemented in 9 centres across the globe (Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Kenya, South Africa and 4 places in India - Mumbai, Pune, Mysore, and Dervan). The program ‘TALENT’, hosted its very first workshop at the B.K.L.W Rural Medical College, a very proud moment for SVJCT.
